Wilson, North Carolina (2009)
Wilson is a city of 50,000 people located in the eastern part of North Carolina off of Interstate-95. As evidenced by the many brick tobacco warehouses throughout town, agriculture was the historic economic base for the community. It has since shifted to a more conventional and balanced economy and the community continues to experience steady growth. The City hired Clarion Associates to lead the creation of a new citywide comprehensive plan, and The Walker Collaborative (TWC) - working with Third Coast Design Studio - served as a sub-consultant to Clarion. TWC's key role was to lead two public charrettes to create concept plans for various focus areas in Wilson, including one for their historic downtown. Some of the plan's key ideas include a farmers market, a new park, a civic center, and a strategy for negotiating building codes to adapt vacant upper floor space into housing and office uses.
