DOWNTOWN RUSSELLVILLE MASTER PLAN
Russellville, Arkansas (2012)
Located 75 miles west of Little Rock, Russellville is a community of 28,000 people. Downtown Russellville consists of approximately 50 blocks and struggles with the same issues as many downtowns: physical deterioration, lack of businesses, little downtown housing, and challenges to pedestrian access. The Walker Collaborative was hired by the City and Main Street Russellville to lead a team of consultants to prepare a plan to strengthen the downtown’s competitiveness. Recommendations included the transformation of the depot area into a public events venue, implementing a “road diet” for Main Street, improving intersections for more pedestrian friendliness, construction of a new downtown library with a public space, facade improvements, and on-street parking regulation. Over 75% of this award-winning plan has been successfully implemented, completely transforming the downtown. In 2017 the same team prepared a five-year plan update.
