NEW TOWN CENTERS

Clemmons, North Carolina

Clemmons Village Center

Clemmons is a community of 18,000 people located in North Carolina’s “Piedmont Triad.” Straddling I-40, much of the community’s development has occurred within the past few decades. In fact, a key complaint of Village officials and citizens was that the community lacks a “sense of place” and strong identity because of the domination of generic suburban development.

The Village hired Clarion Associates to lead the creation of a new comprehensive plan.

The Walker Collaborative (TWC) – working with Common Ground Urban Design + Planning – was a subconsultant to Clarion. TWC’s key role was to lead a public charrette to create a series of concept plans, including the proposed Village Center at the site of a largely vacant strip center. That concept plan features anchoring civic uses – a new Village Hall, a county library, and a post office, surrounded by shops, restaurants, offices, service businesses, and multi-family housing.
