The Walker Collaborative (TWC) was hired by the City to lead a team to prepare of a master plan for the area. The project had strong public engagement with numerous meetings, an online public opinion survey, and a five-day charrette, as well as a retail market analysis.
Key recommendations included:
• Redevelopment of the Front Street corridor as a critical “front door” to Olde Towne, including a jurisdictional transfer from the State DOT to the City
• Pursuing a boutique hotel and a 20,000 SF grocery store
• Expansion of the greenway system along the two adjacent bayous
• Creation of new parking areas and management of on-street parking
• Development of an eco-heritage interpretive center to leverage the area’s swamp ecosystem
• Expansion of funding and operations of the Main Street program, including a potential BID
