NEW TOWN CENTERS
High Point, North Carolina
Mercado District
Located within the 1.5 million-person Piedmont Triad metro area with Greensboro and Winston Salem, High Point is best known as the “Furniture Capital of the World.” The Walker Collaborative (TWC) was hired by the City to lead a comprehensive planning process for the most urban third of the city, including the downtown and surrounding urban centers and neighborhoods.
The plan included a series of mixed-use center plans, with a particular focus on the Mercado District, and a proposed mixed-use town center.
It was meant to provide an economic and cultural focus for the local Latino community. A node of Latino-oriented businesses already existed there, but they were located in a very uninspiring single-story strip center. The plan proposed a more urban and compact town center anchored by an institutional building surrounded by mixed-use buildings organized around a central plaza and featuring a Latin-inspired architectural form and character.
