New Shackle Island Village Concept Plan
Sumner County is a rural county northeast of Nashville. Because the Long Hollow Pike area was threatened by sprawling suburban housing and a commercial strip development, (TWC) was hired by the County to lead the creation of a plan for the 23,640-acre study area. The project included an economic assessment and a multi-day planning charrette.
Among the “place types” designated in the plan were Village Centers and Village Neighborhoods.
To illustrate those place types, a concept plan for the “New Shackle Island Village” was prepared by sub-consultants Kennon Calhoun Workshop. The plan includes mixed-use buildings with ground-floor commercial buildings close to Long Hollow Pike, townhouses, and single-family detached houses with rear alley access. A follow-up to this project was TWC’s complete rewriting of the County’s zoning and development code for the entire county.
